This is my very first bible study so bare with me. In day 2 study she say that it is a story of a party...and me having plenty of experiences with parties i think this suits me. Esther 1:1-8 says that the drinking was according to law. does that mean it was against the law? and then it says that no one was compelled to. But the king ordered all the officers that they should.
So to me its like an under age party where the kids know they are not suppose to drink but there is the temptation and the abundance. Its like peer pressure.
But then again it could be that no one wants to get drunk on wine to quickly because its a party that will last 7 days. They don't want to appear weak, or miss out on the feast.
Reading psalm 49:6-20 tells you not to be afraid of those with riches, but then reading psalm 96:4-6 tells you that the Lord is great and is to be feared above all gods. that strength and beauty are in his sanctuary. So could the guest at this party be mistaking the king for their Lord and are in fear?

Wow Jennifer, great insights and questions.
Looks like you are reading the King James version ..."drinking was according to law". does that mean it was against the law? and then it says that no one was compelled to. Thinking on that one, I looked at other translations and they all seemed to indicate "the law" was the kings command. So he was saying let the drinks flow freely! And, I think you are right, there was a whole lot of peer pressure going on at that party, not the least of which was coming right from the king himself!
Your references to the Psalms show that the people could be deceived by all the wealth and the displays by the king. But the Word in Psalms 49 makes it pretty clear wealth won't buy eternity. Where the real focus needs to be is found in Psalms 96, not in the splendor of the kings palace but in the KING's palace. I like the NIV Readers translation...The Lord is great. He is really worthy of praise.
People should have respect for him as the greatest God of all.
5 All of the gods of the nations are like their statues.
They can’t do anything.
But the Lord made the heavens.
6 Glory and majesty are all around him.
Strength and glory can be seen in his temple.
So if the guys at this party are mistaking the king for the Lord, they should be fearful. The thing is, they have no clue - yet!
Keep reading everyone... the plot thickens!
yay!! I did good...I thought that maybe i was totally misunderstanding what I was reading!!!
